Write a headline that names the job, not the degree

One line under your name: Junior Financial Analyst, B.S. Finance, Excel and SQL. The role you want comes first because that is what the recruiter is matching against. The degree is supporting evidence.

Replace the objective with a three-sentence summary

What you studied, the most relevant thing you have done (an internship, a capstone, a research role), and the role you are targeting. Cut any sentence about being eager or passionate; the reader assumes that, and the space is better spent on a specific result.

Decide whether education or experience leads

If you had a relevant internship or job, experience goes first; that is what full-time hiring managers want to see. If your degree is the most relevant credential you have (common in nursing, engineering, accounting and teaching), education stays on top. Either way, the section that best answers the posting comes first.

Write internship bullets like job bullets

An internship is a job. Title, company, dates, and three bullets that each state an action and a result: Reconciled 200+ vendor invoices per month and flagged $14,000 in duplicate payments. Interns often describe what they observed. Describe what you did.

Keep the best projects, drop the rest

A student resume can list every project. A graduate resume keeps the one or two that most resemble the work you are applying for, with a link if it is public, and cuts the others. If a project produced a real outcome (users, revenue, adoption, an award) it may outrank an unrelated part-time job.

Trim education to what an employer uses

Degree, school, graduation month and year, honors, and GPA if it is 3.5 or above. Relevant coursework is optional now; keep it only if the posting asks for specific knowledge you have no other way to show. Remove high school entirely.

What changes between a student resume and a graduate resume

Most of the material is the same. The difference is emphasis, and a few specific edits make the resume read as post-graduation.

  • Tense. Your degree is complete, so write it as completed: B.A. Communications, May 2026, not expected.
  • Headline and summary. Aimed at a job title, not at a stage of life. Junior Data Analyst rather than Recent graduate seeking opportunities.
  • Campus activities. Keep leadership roles and anything with a result. Drop membership-only activities and anything from your first year that has been superseded.
  • Skills. Tighter and more technical. Employers reading a graduate resume expect tools and methods, grouped and matched to the posting, not general traits.
  • Length. Still one page. Two pages is for people with several years of full-time history; a two-page graduate resume reads as padded.

Every experience bullet reports a result with a number. The restaurant job stays because it shows reliability and trust with cash, but it is last and short. That is the balance a graduate resume should strike.

Mistakes that get new-grad resumes screened out

  • Leading with an objective. Seeking a challenging position with growth opportunities tells the reader nothing and marks the resume as a template. Use a summary with a specific result in it.
  • Listing internship duties instead of outcomes. Assisted the finance team with reports is a duty. What did the report do, and how much faster or more accurate was it because of you?
  • Keeping every campus activity. Curate. A graduate resume with twelve clubs and no results reads as a student who has not decided what they want.
  • A creative template. Entry-level roles attract the most applications and therefore the most ATS filtering. A single-column layout with standard headings survives it; a two-column design with icons often does not.
  • Not tailoring. A new graduate is often applying to several kinds of roles. Each needs its own headline, summary and skills order. The rest can stay the same.
