Sales Representative Resume: Examples (2026)

Sales representative resume example with quota results, summaries, bullets, skills and optional certifications, plus official pay figures and a free template.

Template:

A territory sales representative at a building supply distributor applying for an outside sales job with a commercial roofing manufacturer.

Why this resume works

  • The summary leads with results a sales manager can compare: 140 accounts, territory revenue up from $3.1 million to $4.4 million, and 118 percent of the 2025 quota.
  • New business and won-back business are separate bullets (34 new contractor accounts, 9 lapsed accounts worth $620,000 a year), which shows he can hunt as well as farm.
  • The inside sales job stays in one line, because quoting jobs for walk-in contractors is where his product knowledge comes from, and the manufacturer will sell to those same contractors.

A sales representative resume is itself a sales pitch, and the hiring manager reading it knows exactly what a good pitch looks like. They want proof that you hit a number: how big your quota or territory was, how much of it you closed, and how you found new business instead of waiting for it. Lines like strong closer or excellent communicator do not move them. Revenue, percent of quota, new accounts opened and deals won back do.

This guide covers what to put on a sales rep resume for inside sales, outside or territory sales, and business-to-business roles, with summary and bullet examples for each stage of a sales career, the skills and software hiring managers look for, the certifications that are worth having (none are required for most jobs), and a full example for a building products rep applying to a manufacturer. If you look after existing clients more than you hunt for new ones, the account manager resume example is the closer fit.

How to write a sales representative resume

1

Name the kind of selling you do in the headline

Sales jobs split into inside sales (phone, email and video), outside or territory sales (visits in person) and account management (growing existing clients). Put yours under your name with the product or industry: Territory Sales Representative, Building Products or Inside Sales Representative, Software. A hiring manager filling a field role wants to see field experience at a glance.

2

Open the summary with your best number

Your first sentence gives years in sales, the industry and the size of your book or territory. The second gives one or two results with numbers: percent of quota, revenue growth, rank on the team. The third says what you want next. If you have a President's Club or top-rep award, it belongs here too.

3

Write every bullet around a result

Each bullet starts with a verb and carries a number: revenue, percent of quota, accounts opened, average deal size, win rate, calls or meetings per week. Give context so the number means something: 118 percent of quota tells more than $1.2 million sold on its own, and a branch or team average next to your figure is even better.

4

Show both new business and existing accounts

Most sales jobs need both hunting (finding and closing new customers) and farming (keeping and growing current ones). Give each at least one bullet: new accounts opened and where you found them, and accounts you grew, renewed or won back. Say which you did more of, because some roles are almost all one or the other.

5

List the tools and the sales process you know

Name the CRM you live in (Salesforce, HubSpot, Microsoft Dynamics), prospecting tools such as LinkedIn Sales Navigator or ZoomInfo, and any sales method your company trained you in. Postings often name these, and many hiring systems match on the exact words. Keep the list to what you use every week.

6

Keep education and extras short

Your degree, school and year go near the bottom unless you are a recent graduate. Add sales certifications, a second language if you sell in it, and any license your products require. One page is right for most reps; two pages only once you have ten or more years and several roles worth describing.

Sales representative resume summary examples

Pick the version closest to your situation and swap in your own numbers. Each one covers experience, a result and the job you want.

Entry-level sales representative

Business graduate with 18 months in retail electronics sales, where I averaged 22 percent above my monthly sales target and trained four new hires on the store's financing offers. Comfortable with high call volume, product demos and CRM notes. Seeking an inside sales representative role with a clear path to a territory.

Experienced sales representative

Outside sales representative with five years selling packaging supplies to food manufacturers across Ohio and Indiana. Manage 90 accounts worth $2.6 million a year and finished the last two years at 109 and 114 percent of quota. Seeking a territory role with a larger manufacturer where consultative selling is valued.

Senior sales representative

Senior sales representative with twelve years in industrial equipment, consistently in the top three of a 25-person national team and a three-time President's Club winner. Close complex deals from $150,000 to $900,000 with plant managers and purchasing teams, and mentor newer reps on the team. Seeking a key account or strategic sales role.

Sales representative resume bullet examples

Every bullet below starts with an action and gives a number. Borrow the shape and put in your own results.

  • Finished 2025 at 126 percent of a $1.8 million quota, ranking second of 14 reps in the region.
  • Booked 45+ qualified meetings a month for the field team through cold calls, email sequences and LinkedIn outreach.
  • Raised average order size from $4,200 to $5,600 by bundling service plans with equipment sales.
  • Signed 22 new distributor accounts in a territory that had no active rep for 8 months.
  • Shortened the average sales cycle from 74 to 51 days by sending proposals within one day of each discovery call.
  • Ran product demonstrations for 300+ buyers at four regional trade shows, generating 120 qualified leads.
  • Renewed 96 percent of annual contracts in a book of 70 accounts, the highest renewal rate on the team.
  • Cut quote errors by half by building a shared Excel pricing sheet the 6-person inside team now uses.
  • Recovered $210,000 in at-risk annual revenue by visiting 11 unhappy customers with the service manager.
  • Trained 5 new representatives on the CRM, pricing rules and territory planning during their first 90 days.
  • Earned President's Club in 2024 and 2025 for finishing in the top 10 percent of a 60-person sales force.

Certifications for sales representatives

Most sales representative jobs need no license, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that certification is not required. A certification can still help a newer rep stand out, or show commitment when you move into a new industry. These are real options, from the bodies that issue them:

  • Certified Professional Sales Consultant (CPSC) from the Manufacturers Representatives Educational Research Foundation, run through its certifying body, the Institute for Professional Advancement: a consultative selling program for independent manufacturers' reps, finished with a written exam, an interview and a sales role play.
  • Certified Professional Manufacturers' Representative (CPMR) from the same program: for current and future owners and senior managers of rep firms.
  • Inbound Sales Certification from HubSpot Academy: a free online course and certification, useful early in a sales career.
  • Securities qualification exams, such as the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) and Series 7, run by FINRA: required to register if you sell securities, not for other kinds of sales.

The example, line by line

The example is for Marcus, a territory rep at a building supply distributor who wants to sell for a roofing manufacturer. Here is what each part is doing.

Headline: Territory Sales Representative, Building Products. It says field sales and names the industry, which is what the manufacturer's regional manager scans for first.

Summary: the first sentence gives the size of his book (140 contractor accounts) and where it is. The second carries his two strongest numbers: revenue from $3.1 million to $4.4 million and 118 percent of the 2025 quota. Spanish is in the third sentence because many roofing crews and owners in his area speak it. The last sentence names the job he wants.

Experience: five bullets, each with a different kind of proof. Territory size and visits a week, revenue growth, 34 new accounts with the method behind them, 9 won-back accounts worth $620,000 a year, and a 41 percent quote conversion rate next to the branch average of 30 percent. The comparison makes the number mean something. The inside sales job keeps one line: 60+ orders a day and quotes up to $80,000.

Skills, certificate and education: skills sit right after experience because this manufacturer's posting lists them, including Salesforce by name. The HubSpot certificate and his business degree are short. Education sits low, since six years of results matter more than the degree now.

Mistakes that sink sales resumes

  • No quota numbers at all. A sales manager assumes a rep who leaves out quota results did not hit them. Give percent of quota for each year you can, even a year you missed, next to what you did about it.
  • Revenue with no context. Sold $900,000 could be great or weak. Add the quota, the team rank or the growth from the year before.
  • Only describing the territory. Responsible for 80 accounts in three counties is a job description. Say what happened to those accounts while you had them.
  • Hiding the kind of sales you do. Inside, outside, new business and account management are different jobs. If the posting is for field sales and your resume never mentions visits, the fit is not obvious.
  • Sharing confidential figures. Customer names, exact margins and pricing can break a confidentiality agreement. Use percentages, rounded figures and descriptions like a regional grocery chain instead.
  • Claims the interview will not support. Expect to be asked how you got every number on the page. If you cannot explain a figure in two sentences, cut it or fix it.

Frequently asked questions

What should a sales representative put on a resume?

A headline naming the kind of sales and the industry, a short summary with your best result, each sales job with bullets built on numbers (quota, revenue, new accounts, win rate), the CRM and prospecting tools you use, and your education and any certifications.

How do I show quota attainment on a resume?

Write it as a percent with the year, for example 118 percent of the 2025 quota, and add the quota amount or your rank on the team if you can share them. Put your best year in the summary and the rest in your bullets.

What if I missed quota last year?

Leave that year's percentage out and lead with results that were strong: new accounts, renewals, a large deal, or improvement over the prior year. If the whole team missed because of a market change, a rank on the team shows how you did against everyone else.

How do I write a sales resume with no sales experience?

Use any job where you persuaded people or worked with customers: retail, serving, fundraising, recruiting volunteers. Give numbers such as upsell rates, tips as a share of sales, or money raised. An entry-level inside sales role is the usual first step.

Should I list my President's Club award?

Yes. Put it in the summary and in the bullets for that job with the year and what it took, such as the top 10 percent of the sales force. It is one of the few awards sales managers across companies recognize.

Do sales representatives need a certification?

Usually not. Certification is optional for most sales jobs. A few products require a license to sell, such as securities, which requires FINRA qualification exams. Otherwise, choose a certification only if it fits the kind of selling you do.

How long should a sales representative resume be?

One page for most reps. Two pages is fine with ten or more years and several employers, as long as your best numbers are on the first page.

What is the difference between inside and outside sales on a resume?

Inside sales resumes show activity and conversion from the desk: calls, meetings booked, pipeline and close rates. Outside sales resumes add territory size, visits and account growth. Say which one you have done, and translate your numbers if you are switching.

Should I name my customers on my resume?

Usually not. Describe them instead, such as a national restaurant chain or a 40-location dealer group. Naming customers or sharing exact prices can break a confidentiality agreement, and a description makes the same point.

Which skills matter most on a sales rep resume?

Prospecting, discovery, negotiation and closing, plus the CRM by name. Show soft skills like resilience and follow-through in your results rather than listing them as words.
