Java Developer Resume: Examples (2026)

Java developer resume example with summary and bullet examples, Spring and cloud skills, Oracle certification, official pay data and a free template.

Template:

A Java developer with six years at an insurance company applying for a senior Java developer role at a regional bank.

Why this resume works

  • The headline and skills name the exact stack banks post for (Java 21, Spring Boot, Kafka, Oracle Database), so a recruiter sees the match before reading a bullet.
  • The claims bullets use business numbers a bank manager understands: 1.2 million policies, quote time from 9 seconds to 2, and 11 days of manual work removed each month.
  • The Oracle Java SE 21 certification from 2025 backs up the version upgrade she led, which is one of the first things the bank's team will ask about.

Java runs a large share of the systems that banks, insurers, retailers and government agencies depend on every day, so Java developer postings tend to be specific. They name the Java version, the frameworks (almost always Spring), the database and the way the company ships code. A Java developer resume works when it matches that list honestly and then proves, with numbers, that your code handled real traffic, real money or real deadlines.

This guide covers the sections and order that work, the Java skills and tools postings ask for (explained in plain words), summary and bullet examples for junior, mid-level and senior developers, the Oracle certification and when it helps, and a full example for a developer at an insurance company applying for a senior role at a bank. For a resume that is not tied to one language, see the software engineer resume example.

How to write a Java developer resume

1

Name your Java stack in the headline

Under your name, put Java Developer plus the two or three things you are best at, such as Spring Boot and Microservices or Java and Angular, Full Stack. Java jobs range from building web services to Android apps to trading systems, and the headline tells the reader which kind you are.

2

Put a short skills section near the top

Java postings are keyword-heavy, and recruiters check the list first: Java version, Spring, the database, the build tool, the test tools. A ten-item skills section right under the summary lets them tick the boxes quickly. Write versions where they matter (Java 21, not just Java) and use the posting's spelling.

3

Write a summary that says what you build and for whom

Three sentences: years of experience and the kind of systems (claims, payments, logistics, online stores), your main frameworks and what you do well with them, then your certification if you have one and the role you want. Mention the industry, because banks and insurers often prefer developers who already know their rules and vocabulary.

4

Turn Java work into business results

For each job, write bullets that start with an action and end with what changed. Faster responses, fewer outages, shorter release cycles, less manual work for another team and successful upgrades all count. Say the size: number of users, transactions, services or applications. Upgraded 22 applications to Java 21 is stronger than worked on Java upgrades.

5

Explain modernization work in plain words

Much Java work is improving old systems. Say what the old system was, what you changed and what it made possible: split a large application into 4 smaller services reads better than decomposed the monolith to a recruiter who is not an engineer, and the manager still understands it.

6

Finish with certifications and education

List an Oracle Java certification with its version and year, then any cloud certification. Your degree goes last once you have a few years of experience; new developers put it near the top with relevant courses and projects. Keep the resume to one page unless you have ten or more years of work.

Skills and keywords for a Java developer resume

These skills and tools appear most often in Java developer postings. Use the ones you really have, in the posting's wording.

Hard skills

  • Core Java (recent versions such as Java 17 and 21)
  • Spring Boot, the framework most Java web service teams build with
  • Spring Security for sign-in and access control
  • Hibernate and JPA, which connect Java code to a database
  • REST APIs and microservices (small services that each do one job)
  • SQL with Oracle Database, PostgreSQL or MySQL
  • Messaging with Apache Kafka or RabbitMQ
  • Unit and integration testing with JUnit and Mockito
  • JVM tuning: memory and performance settings for the program that runs Java code
  • Front-end basics (Angular or React) for full-stack roles

Soft skills

  • Reading and safely changing code written by others years ago
  • Clear written design notes and code review comments
  • Working with business analysts to turn requirements into features
  • Estimating work honestly
  • Mentoring junior developers
  • Careful handling of regulated data such as payments and health records

Tools and software

  • IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse
  • Maven or Gradle build tools
  • Git with GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket
  • Jenkins or GitHub Actions for automated builds
  • Docker, Kubernetes or Red Hat OpenShift
  • SonarQube for code quality checks

Java developer resume summary examples

Choose the one closest to your level and change the details. Each names your Java stack, the systems you build, a result and the job you want.

Junior Java developer

Computer science graduate with a six-month Java internship at a logistics company, where I built two Spring Boot endpoints for tracking shipments and wrote their JUnit tests. Comfortable with Java 17, SQL and Git, and completed a capstone inventory app with a React front end. Seeking a junior Java developer role with a team that does code review.

Mid-level Java developer

Java developer with four years building online ordering services in Spring Boot and PostgreSQL for a grocery delivery company serving 300,000 customers. Improved order service response time by 60 percent and own its test suite. Seeking a Java developer role on a team moving to cloud-based services.

Senior Java developer

Senior Java developer with eleven years in banking, leading a team of six that runs the payments platform for a bank processing 2 million transactions a day. Designed the move from overnight batch jobs to real-time Kafka processing and set the team's coding and review standards. Seeking a lead developer or architect role.

Java developer resume bullet examples

Each bullet starts with an action, names the Java work in plain words and includes a number. Keep the shape and use your own facts.

  • Built 8 Spring Boot services for online account opening, handling 5,000 applications a day.
  • Cut the average response time of the account balance API from 800 to 150 milliseconds by fixing slow queries and adding a cache.
  • Replaced 30 overnight batch jobs with real-time Kafka processing, so customers saw payments within a minute instead of the next morning.
  • Raised unit test coverage from 35 to 80 percent on a 10-year-old codebase, cutting bugs found after release by half.
  • Moved 12 applications from company servers to Docker containers on OpenShift over 9 months.
  • Fixed a memory leak that restarted the pricing service 4 times a week, ending the restarts.
  • Added Spring Security sign-in with single sign-on for 3 internal apps used by 2,000 employees.
  • Automated builds and tests in Jenkins, shortening the release checklist from 2 days to 3 hours.
  • Reviewed about 25 pull requests a month and wrote the team's Java coding guide.
  • Worked with 2 business analysts to deliver 14 regulatory reporting changes on time.
  • Trained 4 new developers on the codebase, each shipping a change in their first 2 weeks.

Certifications for Java developers

No license is needed to work as a Java developer, and many employers hire without any certification. Certifications are optional, but an Oracle Java certification is the one Java postings name, especially at banks, insurers, consultancies and government contractors, and a cloud certification helps for teams running Java in the cloud:

  • Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE 21 Developer from Oracle, earned by passing exam 1Z0-830 on the Java 21 language and its newer features. If you hold an earlier Java version certification, list it with its version number.
  • AWS Certified Developer, Associate from Amazon Web Services: for building and deploying applications on AWS.
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Associate from Amazon Web Services: useful for senior developers who design how services fit together.
  • Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) from The Linux Foundation: for teams that run Java services in containers.

The example, line by line

The example is for Priya, a Java developer with six years at an insurer who wants a senior role at a bank. Here is why each part is where it is.

Headline: Java Developer, Spring Boot and Microservices. Those are the first three terms in most bank Java postings, so the match is visible at a glance.

Summary: six years, the kind of system (policy and claims) and the scale (1.2 million policies), then her stack and what she is good at, then the certification and the job she wants. Naming banking or payments tells the reader she is choosing this move on purpose.

Skills: ten items placed above experience, with versions where they matter (Java 21, JUnit 5). For Java roles the recruiter usually checks this list first.

Experience: four bullets for her current job, each with a result. Splitting part of a 15-year-old application into 4 services cut release time from 6 weeks to 1. The quote engine went from 9 seconds to 2. The upgrade of 22 applications to Java 21 finished 3 weeks early. The Kafka feed saved 11 days of manual work a month, which a bank's operations team will recognize. Her consulting job keeps one line about 3 client projects.

Certification and education: the Oracle Java SE 21 certification from 2025, then her computer engineering degree from 2020.

Mistakes that cost Java developers interviews

  • No versions. Java, Spring could mean 2010 or 2026. Write Java 17 or 21 and Spring Boot 3 if that is what you use; old versions only if the posting asks for them.
  • Listing every Java library you have touched. Twenty Apache libraries in a row hide the skills that matter. Keep the list to what the posting and your best work share.
  • Bullets full of class names. Refactored ClaimServiceImpl means nothing to a recruiter. Describe what the code does for the business and what improved.
  • Leaving out the industry. Banks, insurers and healthcare companies value developers who know their rules. Name the kind of company and system even if you cannot name the employer's clients.
  • Hiding legacy work. Maintaining and upgrading older Java systems is valuable and in demand. Show it with numbers instead of apologizing for it.
  • A certification with no version or year. Oracle certifications are tied to a Java version. Write the full name, the version and the year you earned it.

Frequently asked questions

What should a Java developer put on a resume?

Contact details, a headline naming your Java stack, a short summary, a skills section with Java version, frameworks, database and tools, your work experience with results, any Oracle or cloud certification, and your education.

Which Java skills should I list?

The ones in the posting that you really use: usually Java with its version, Spring Boot, Hibernate or JPA, SQL and a named database, REST APIs, JUnit, Maven or Gradle, Git, and often Kafka, Docker or Kubernetes. Add front-end skills only for full-stack roles.

Is the Oracle Java certification worth it?

It is optional, but it is the Java certification that postings name, and it helps most when you are early in your career, changing industries or applying to banks, insurers and consultancies. Experience still matters more.

How do I write a junior Java developer resume with no experience?

Lead with your education and two or three Java projects written like jobs: what the application does, the frameworks you used, and a result such as users or tests passing. Add internships, coding bootcamp work and open-source contributions.

Should a Java developer resume have a projects section?

Yes if you have less than two years of work, or if a personal project shows a skill your jobs do not, such as Spring Boot 3 or Kubernetes. Experienced developers can usually leave it off.

How long should a Java developer resume be?

One page for most developers. Two pages is fine for senior developers and architects with ten or more years, as long as the first page carries the skills and the most recent roles.

How do I describe legacy system work?

Name the system in plain words, what you changed and what improved: fewer outages, faster releases, a finished upgrade, lower costs. Upgrades and migrations are strong material because many companies need exactly that work.

Should I list Java 8 if I mostly use it?

Yes, be honest about what you use, but also show any newer versions you have worked with, even in projects. Many postings now ask for Java 17 or later.

What is the difference between a Java developer and a software engineer resume?

A Java developer resume goes deeper on one stack: versions, Spring modules, build and test tools. A software engineer resume is broader and often stresses design and scale across several languages.

Do I need a computer science degree to be a Java developer?

Many postings ask for a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, but some accept equivalent experience, bootcamps or certification. If you have no degree, lead with projects, work results and a certification.
