Paralegal Resume: Examples (2026)

Paralegal resume example with summaries, bullet points, skills and the main paralegal certifications, plus official pay and job outlook and a free template.

Template:

A corporate paralegal with six years at a business law firm, applying for an in-house corporate paralegal job at a manufacturing company's legal department.

Why this resume works

  • Each bullet names substantive work an attorney can delegate, such as first drafts of consents and officer certificates, with the time saved: about 15 hours a week of associate work.
  • Deal size and volume are specific (14 acquisitions from $3 million to $85 million, 22 due diligence reviews), so an in-house lawyer can compare them with the company's own deals.
  • Entity management gets its own bullet with about 90 clients, 400 subsidiaries and filings in 31 states, because keeping entities in good standing is a large part of in-house paralegal work.

A paralegal does legal work that a lawyer would otherwise do, under that lawyer's supervision: research, first drafts, discovery, case files, transaction checklists, filings with courts and agencies. So an attorney reading a paralegal resume is asking one thing above all: how much of my work can I hand to this person, and how little will I need to fix? The answer lives in your practice area, the documents you draft, the size of the matters and the results.

This page covers what goes on a paralegal resume and in what order, summary and bullet examples for entry-level, experienced and senior paralegals, the skills and research tools postings name, the national paralegal certifications and what each requires, and a full example for a corporate paralegal moving from a law firm to an in-house legal department. If your work is mainly calendars, filings and correspondence for attorneys, many firms call that job legal assistant, and the legal assistant resume example is written for it.

How to write a paralegal resume

1

Put your practice area and credential in the headline

Litigation, corporate, real estate, intellectual property, immigration, family and personal injury paralegals do very different work. A headline such as Corporate Paralegal, Certified Paralegal (CP) tells the reader where you fit and that you hold a national credential. If you are certified, the letters can also follow your name.

2

Write a summary an attorney can delegate from

Say how many years, what kind of employer (firm size, in-house, government), the practice area and the types of matters. Then name the documents and tasks you handle on your own, your certification and education, and the role you want. Three or four sentences.

3

Describe substantive work, with matter size

The bullets should show legal work, not only office tasks. Litigation: discovery sets, deposition summaries, privilege logs, trial exhibits, research memos. Corporate: consents, closing sets, due diligence, entity filings. Add scale: number of cases or deals, dollar values, documents reviewed, courts or states. Each bullet starts with a verb and carries a number.

4

Name your research and review tools

Westlaw or Lexis for research, Relativity, Everlaw or DISCO for e-discovery, CaseMap or TrialDirector for trial work, and entity or contract tools for corporate roles. Postings list these by name, and hiring software matches the exact words.

5

Separate certification from certificate

A certificate is what a school gives you for finishing a paralegal program. A certification, such as the CP, RP or PP, comes from passing a national exam. List the certificate under education and the certification in its own section, with the organization and year, so neither is mistaken for the other.

6

Finish with education and a focused skills list

Your degree, any paralegal certificate and the schools, then eight to ten skills in the posting's words. One page suits most paralegals; senior paralegals with long trial or deal histories may use two, as long as the first page carries the summary and current role.

  • Trained 3 new paralegals on the firm's discovery and e-filing procedures.

Paralegal certifications

No national license is required to work as a paralegal, and most employers hire on education and experience. A national certification is still the clearest proof of your knowledge, and some employers prefer or require one. Three organizations offer the main credentials. As of September 2026:

  • Certified Paralegal (CP) from NALA, the Paralegal Association: a national exam you can qualify for through paralegal education, a bachelor's degree, or paralegal work experience. NALA also offers the Advanced Certified Paralegal (ACP) for specialty areas.
  • Registered Paralegal (RP) from the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, earned by passing the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE). It is meant for experienced paralegals: for example, a bachelor's degree plus at least three years of substantive paralegal work, as the NFPA eligibility rules set out.
  • CORE Registered Paralegal (CRP) from the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, earned by passing the Paralegal CORE Competency Exam (PCCE): designed for early-career paralegals, with routes for recent graduates.
  • Professional Paralegal (PP) from NALS, the association for legal professionals: a multiple-choice exam that assesses the qualifications of a paralegal professional, with eligibility based on education and work experience, as described in the NALS certification manual.

The example, line by line

The example is for Hannah, a corporate paralegal at a business law firm who wants to move in-house. Here is what each part is doing.

Headline: Corporate Paralegal, Certified Paralegal (CP). Practice area and national credential in one line.

Summary: six years, a 40-lawyer firm and about 90 clients first. Then four kinds of work she owns (drafting, due diligence, checklists, entity records), her credential and education, and the in-house role she wants.

Certification: her CP from NALA with the year 2022, listed apart from the school certificate so the two are not confused.

Current job: five bullets, each substantive. Deals first, with count and value range (14 deals, $3 million to $85 million). Due diligence next, with document volume and the 180 flagged contracts. Then entity management across 31 states, drafting that saves associates about 15 hours a week, and research on 12 entity conversions. Together they show an in-house lawyer exactly what she can take off their desk.

Earlier job: one line from title work, about 50 closings a month, which shows early experience with liens and searches.

Education and skills: the paralegal certificate and bachelor's degree, then eight skills naming corporate tasks and the tools she uses.

Mistakes that hold paralegal resumes back

  • Only administrative tasks. Filing, scheduling and copying are part of many paralegal jobs, but if that is all the resume shows, it reads as a legal assistant resume. Lead with research, drafting and case or deal work.
  • Mixing up certificate and certification. Writing certified paralegal when you hold a school certificate can be seen as a false claim. Use the exact names.
  • No matter size. Assisted with discovery is empty. Say how many cases, how many documents, how many depositions or deals.
  • Naming clients or case captions. Describe matters by type and size. Confidentiality matters more in this job than almost any other.
  • Suggesting you give legal advice. Words like advised clients worry attorneys. Write explained the process to clients or prepared for attorney review.
  • One resume for every practice area. A litigation posting and a corporate posting use different words. Change the headline, summary and top skills for each.

Frequently asked questions

What should a paralegal put on a resume?

Contact details, a headline with your practice area and any certification, a short summary, your certifications, each job with the substantive legal work you did and its size, your education including any paralegal certificate, and skills naming research and review tools.

What is the difference between a paralegal and a legal assistant resume?

A paralegal resume leads with substantive legal work: research, drafting, discovery, case or deal management. A legal assistant resume, at firms that separate the roles, leads with attorney support: calendars, filings, correspondence and billing. Some employers use the titles for the same job, so follow the posting.

Do I need a certification to be a paralegal?

Usually not, but it helps. Many employers hire on a paralegal certificate or degree plus experience. A national certification such as the CP, RP, CRP or PP shows tested knowledge and can help with competitive or in-house jobs.

Which paralegal certification is best?

It depends on your stage. The CRP from NFPA is designed for early-career paralegals. The CP from NALA is widely recognized at any stage. The RP from NFPA is aimed at experienced paralegals, and the PP from NALS sets eligibility by education and work experience. Check which one employers in your area mention.

How do I write a paralegal resume with no experience?

Lead with your paralegal education, any internship or clinic hours, and the legal tasks you did there, such as drafting, research or record summaries. Add office jobs that show deadlines and confidential work, and list the research tools you trained on.

Should I list my paralegal certificate program?

Yes, under education, with the school and the year. If the program is approved by the American Bar Association and the posting asks for that, say so.

How long should a paralegal resume be?

One page for most paralegals. Two pages is fine for senior paralegals with long trial or transaction histories, if the first page holds the summary and current job.

What skills should a paralegal list?

Skills from your practice area in the posting's words: legal research, drafting for attorney review, discovery and document review, deposition summaries, trial preparation, due diligence or entity management, plus the research and e-discovery tools you use.

How do I move from a law firm to an in-house paralegal job?

Show work a company legal department does every day: contracts, entity compliance, policies and outside counsel coordination. Put that work first in your bullets, and give the volume, such as agreements reviewed or entities maintained.

What resume template suits a paralegal?

A conservative, single-column layout. The classic template used in Hannah's example is a safe fit for law firms and legal departments, and hiring software reads it cleanly.
