Template:

A second shift production supervisor at an auto parts plant, promoted from machine operator, applying for a production supervisor job at a larger automotive supplier.

Why this resume works

  • The first bullet gives the size of her team in one line: 28 operators and 3 team leads across 6 lines.
  • Safety, quality, delivery and people each get a number: 540 days without a lost-time injury, scrap from 4.2 to 2.6 percent, on-time shipments from 91 to 98 percent, turnover from 35 to 18 percent.
  • Her promotion from the floor is visible, which tells a plant manager she knows the work she supervises.

A supervisor is the first level of management: you run a shift, a crew or a team, and you are responsible for the work getting done safely, correctly and on time by other people. The job looks similar whether it is a production line, a warehouse shift, a call center floor, a store or a restaurant. You schedule people, train them, coach the ones who struggle, handle problems on the spot and report the numbers up the chain. The manager hiring a supervisor wants to see how many people you have led, what your team's numbers looked like under you, and whether you keep people safe and keep them from quitting.

This guide covers how to write a supervisor resume for any industry, with a full example for a second shift production supervisor, the steps to write each section, summaries for first-time and experienced supervisors, bullets from several kinds of workplaces, the skills postings ask for, and the safety and quality training worth listing. How to write a supervisor resume

1

Put the kind of team in your headline

"Supervisor" alone could mean a store, a call center or a factory floor. Add the setting: Production Supervisor, Injection Molding, Shift Supervisor, Distribution Center or Customer Service Supervisor. A hiring manager in your industry will spot you, and one in another industry will know what to translate.

2

Open with the size of your team

The first thing a reader wants is how many people you lead and on what shift or schedule. Put it in the first line of your summary and your first bullet: "Supervise 28 operators and 3 team leads on second shift." Then name two areas where your team does well.

3

Give your team's numbers, not your duties

Every workplace tracks a few numbers: safety incidents, units per hour, scrap or error rate, on-time shipments, calls answered, wait time, sales per labor hour, audit scores. Pick the ones your manager watches and show where they were before you and where they are now.

4

Show you build people

Hiring, training, coaching and keeping people are half the job. Count them: new hires trained, turnover before and after, team members promoted, cross-training completed. If you have handled discipline fairly or turned around a struggling employee, one bullet can show that without names.

5

Show where you came from if you were promoted

Many supervisors are promoted from the team they now lead. List the earlier job with one line and a number. It tells a new employer you know the work, which makes you more believable when you coach others.

6

Add safety and quality training, then education

List safety cards, quality certifications, forklift trainer duties and first aid with the issuer and year, then languages if you use them at work, then your diploma or degree. A supervisor resume should fit on one page unless you have ten or more years of leadership.

Supervisor resume bullet examples

These come from factories, warehouses, stores and call centers. Each gives a team size or a number, and most give a result.

  • Covered 2 departments during a manager's 8-week leave with no missed shipments.

Certifications and training for supervisors

No license or certification is required to be a supervisor in general. What your workplace asks for depends on the industry, and some training is required by law for the equipment your team uses. These are the credentials supervisors list most, from the bodies that issue or set them:

  • OSHA 10-hour and 30-hour cards from the OSHA Outreach Training Program: OSHA describes the program as voluntary and says the 30-hour course is meant for workers with some safety responsibility, which fits supervisors. OSHA also notes that outreach training does not replace the job-specific training its standards require.
  • Forklift and powered industrial truck training: under the OSHA powered industrial truck standard, employers must train, evaluate and certify each operator and re-evaluate them at least once every three years. If you train or evaluate operators, say so in a bullet.
  • Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA) from ASQ: for people who work on quality improvement without a full-time quality role. As of September 2026 it asks for two years of work experience or an associate degree.
  • Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) from ASQ: a later goal for supervisors moving into management, since it asks for 10 years of experience, 5 of them in decision-making roles.
  • First aid and CPR, and industry training such as food safety or hazardous materials handling, belong here when your workplace requires them.

The example, line by line

The example is Rosa's. She has supervised second shift at an auto parts plant for five years, after starting there as a machine operator, and wants a supervisor job at a larger plant. Here is what each part does.

Headline: Production Supervisor, Injection Molding. Her level and her process, the two filters a plant recruiter uses.

Summary: five years supervising and four on the floor first, then her team (28 operators, 3 team leads, 6 lines), the three areas where her shift is strong, her OSHA card and ASQ certification, her second language and her goal.

Experience: the first bullet is her team. The next four each cover one number a plant manager watches: on-time shipments from 91 to 98 percent, scrap from 4.2 to 2.6 percent in 12 months, 540 days without a lost-time injury with a 10-minute huddle every shift, and 19 operators hired in 2025 with 90-day turnover down from 35 to 18 percent. Her earlier job keeps one line: 2 presses and 11 operators trained as team lead.

Skills, certifications, languages and education: eight skills, the OSHA 30-hour card from 2022 and CQIA from 2024, English and Spanish, and her manufacturing degree from 2020.

Supervisor resume mistakes

  • No team size. Supervising 4 people and 40 are different jobs. Put the number in the first bullet.
  • Listing your own tasks. Once you supervise, the resume should be about what your team achieved under you, not the work you do with your own hands.
  • Leaving out safety. In plants, warehouses and kitchens, safety is the first thing a manager asks about. Give your record and what you did to keep it.
  • Hiding a promotion. Listing only the supervisor title can make it look like you were hired in. Show the earlier role; being promoted is proof your employer trusted you.
  • Naming people in discipline examples. Describe how you handle attendance or performance problems in general terms. Names and details do not belong on a resume.
  • Company-only terms. Internal names for lines, reports and programs mean nothing to another employer. Use plain words such as scrap rate or on-time shipments.

Frequently asked questions

What should a supervisor put on a resume?

A headline with your type of team, a summary with team size and strengths, bullets that give your team's safety, quality, output and people results, the systems you use, safety and quality training, languages you use at work and your education.

How do I write a supervisor resume with no supervisor experience?

Show the leadership you already have: training new hires, covering for the supervisor, leading a shift or project, running a safety meeting. Count each one, and aim your headline at the supervisor role you want.

What skills should a supervisor list?

Scheduling, assigning work, safety, quality checks, training, coaching, attendance and performance management and daily reporting, plus your workplace's systems. Communication, fairness and calm under pressure are the soft skills employers mention most.

How do I show leadership on a supervisor resume?

With numbers about people: team size, new hires trained, turnover before and after, team members promoted and results your team reached. A bullet about turning around a problem, such as absences or a failing audit, also shows leadership.

Do supervisors need a degree?

Usually not. Many supervisors are promoted from the floor with a high school diploma, and experience in the work matters most. Some larger employers ask for an associate or bachelor's degree for production or operations supervisors, so check the posting.

Is an OSHA 30 card worth putting on a supervisor resume?

Yes, in manufacturing, warehousing and construction, where many employers ask for it. OSHA describes its outreach program as voluntary, so the card shows initiative; it does not replace the equipment-specific training employers must provide.

How long should a supervisor resume be?

One page for most supervisors. Senior supervisors with ten or more years and several roles can use two, with the current job on the first page.

How do I list a promotion on my resume?

Either list each title as its own entry under the same employer with its dates, or write both titles in one entry, such as Machine Operator, then Team Lead. Either way, the reader should see you moved up.

What is the difference between a supervisor and a manager?

A supervisor leads frontline workers directly and runs the day's work. A manager is usually responsible for several supervisors, a budget and longer-term planning. Titles vary by company, so describe your team and duties clearly.

Should I include a second language on a supervisor resume?

Yes, if you use it at work. Many teams include workers who are more comfortable in another language, and a supervisor who can train and explain safety rules in both is valuable. Add a languages section with your level.
