Cook Resume: Examples and Tips (2026)

Cook resume example for line, prep and station cooks: skills, bullets with real volume, food handler cards to list, official pay figures and a free template.

Template:

A grill and saute line cook with five years of experience applying for a lead line cook job in a busy hotel restaurant.

Why this resume works

  • Every bullet names a station and a volume, such as the grill for 250 to 400 covers on weekends, so the kitchen manager can see the pace she already works at.
  • Consistency is shown, not claimed: fewer than 1 in 100 grill plates sent back for temperature, and 3 stations she can cover.
  • Her ServSafe Food Handler card and her newer ServSafe Manager certification sit in their own section, so the screening question is answered at a glance and the lead role looks like a natural next step.

A kitchen manager hiring a cook reads your resume with one picture in mind: a Friday night ticket rail. Can you hold a station when the printer does not stop? Do you come in, set up your mise en place without being told, keep your area clean and your food consistent, and still have your prep done for tomorrow? A good cook resume answers that with the station you work, how many covers or tickets you handle, and the proof that your food goes out right.

Below you will find what belongs on a line cook or prep cook resume, how to describe volume and speed with honest numbers, which food safety cards to list, skills and bullet examples, and a full example for a grill cook who wants a lead line cook job. How to write a cook resume

1

Name your stations in the headline

Under your name, write the job you do in kitchen terms: Line Cook, Grill and Saute, Prep Cook, Pizza Cook, Breakfast Cook. A kitchen manager filling a fry station or a sushi counter looks for those exact words, and a general headline like Hard-working team member tells them nothing.

2

Put food safety cards near the top

Many kitchens ask whether you have a food handler card before anything else. Give it a short section right after your summary with the name of the card, who issued it and the year. If your city or state requires one and yours has expired, renew it before you apply.

3

Describe volume honestly

Covers a night, tickets an hour, meals a day or pounds of prep are the numbers of a cook's job. Use the ones your kitchen tracks and round down if you are unsure. A cafeteria cook serving 600 lunches and a line cook doing 300 dinners are both busy; the numbers show which kind of busy you are used to.

4

Show consistency and reliability

Chefs worry most about food that comes back and cooks who do not show up. Say how you keep plates right (specs, temperatures, tasting) and give proof such as a low send-back rate, being trusted to open or close, or covering other stations when the kitchen is short.

5

List every station and skill you can really work

Add a skills section with stations (grill, saute, fry, garde manger, pantry, pizza, pastry), techniques (knife work, butchery, sauces, baking) and equipment (combi oven, smoker, wood-fired oven, slicer). Only list what you could do on your first shift.

6

Keep education short and add culinary training

A high school diploma or GED is enough for most cook jobs. Add a culinary class, a career-tech program or an apprenticeship with the year. If you have no kitchen experience yet, put any food work first: school cafeteria, catering, concessions or cooking for a large family event.

Cook resume bullet examples

Start with the station or task, add the volume, then the result. Swap in your own numbers.

  • Worked the saute station for 200 to 280 covers a night, keeping ticket times under 12 minutes.
  • Prepped 25 sauces, dressings and garnishes daily from recipe cards for a 150-seat restaurant.
  • Produced 600 cafeteria lunches a day for a school district kitchen, meeting portion and temperature rules on every batch.
  • Cooked breakfast for up to 200 tickets on weekend mornings on a two-person flat-top line.
  • Cut prep time by 30 minutes a shift by reorganizing the walk-in by station.
  • Plated up to 350 banquet dinners in under 40 minutes as part of a six-cook team.

  • Kept temperature logs for 8 coolers and hot-holding units with no missed entries in 18 months.
  • Trained 5 prep cooks on knife cuts and portion scales during their first week.
  • Butchered and portioned 80 pounds of chicken and pork weekly, cutting waste by about 10 percent.
  • Closed the kitchen 3 nights a week, finishing breakdown, cleaning and next-day prep list.

Food handler cards and certifications for cooks

You do not need a license to work as a cook, but food safety training is often required, and the rules come from your state or local health department, so they differ from place to place. Illinois, for example, generally expects food employees to get food handler training within 30 days of hire from an ANSI accredited program, and Texas has a similar 30-day rule (both as of September 2026). Ask the kitchen or check the health department's website for your area. The credentials cooks list most often:

  • Food handler card or certificate, such as ServSafe Food Handler from the National Restaurant Association or another ANSI accredited course accepted where you work.
  • Food protection manager certification, such as ServSafe Manager: not required for most line cooks, but it helps if you want to become a lead cook, kitchen manager or sous chef.
  • State or local certificates that your health department issues or recognizes. List the name exactly as it is printed on the card and the year you earned it.

The example, line by line

The example belongs to Keisha, a grill cook in Columbus who wants to step up to lead line cook. Here is how each part earns its place.

Headline: Line Cook, Grill and Saute. Two stations in four words, the terms a kitchen manager searches for.

Summary: her years, her current station and the volume (a 220-seat room doing 250 to 400 covers on weekend nights) come first. Then the stations she can cover and the leadership she already does (opening, closing, training), and last the job she wants.

Certifications: two lines, placed before her experience because kitchens often screen on them: her ServSafe Food Handler card from 2025 and the ServSafe Manager certification she earned in 2026 to prepare for a lead role.

Experience: four bullets at Scioto Street Grill. The first shows pace and quality together (fewer than 1 in 100 plates sent back). The second shows flexibility across 3 stations. The third shows she can be trusted with the kitchen alone: opening 3 mornings a week, 6 stations set, about 40 prep items. The fourth is the lead cook proof, 7 new cooks trained. Her diner job adds two lines: prep volume (30 pounds of potatoes a day, up to 150 tickets) and 4 clean inspections.

Skills and education: ten skills made of stations and habits chefs care about, then her diploma with the culinary arts career-tech program she finished in high school.

Mistakes that cost cooks interviews

  • Writing cooked food as a duty. Every cook cooks. Say which station, which menu and how many covers or tickets.
  • Calling yourself a chef. If your job was line cook, use that title. Kitchen managers check references, and an inflated title raises doubts about the rest.
  • Leaving off food safety training. If you have a food handler card, list it. If it expired, renew it. It is often the first thing a kitchen manager asks about.
  • No mention of reliability. Opening, closing, covering shifts and staying through a double are real selling points in a kitchen. Put them in a bullet.
  • Listing stations you cannot work yet. If you list sushi or pastry, expect to be tested on it during a stage. Only list what you can do on day one.
  • A long objective about your dreams. Keep the summary to the station, the volume and the job you want now.

Frequently asked questions

What should I put on a line cook resume?

Your stations in the headline, a short summary with your volume, any food handler card, each kitchen with the station you worked and the covers or tickets you handled, the stations and techniques you know, and your education or culinary training.

How do I write a cook resume with no experience?

List anything that involved food: helping in a school cafeteria, catering with family, a food truck, concessions, or a culinary class. Add a food handler card (courses such as ServSafe Food Handler are taken online), and put your reliability and willingness to learn prep into a short summary.

What is the difference between a prep cook and a line cook resume?

A prep cook resume shows the amount and range of prep: pounds of product, sauces, recipes followed and how the walk-in is kept. A line cook resume shows stations, cover counts and ticket times during service.

Do I need a food handler card to be a cook?

It depends on where you work. Some states and cities require food employees to complete food handler training within a set time after hire, and others leave it to the employer. Check your state or local health department, and list your card if you have one.

What skills should a cook put on a resume?

The stations you can work, knife skills, cooking to temperature, batch prep, following recipe and plating specs, food storage and labeling, and cleaning and sanitizing. Add soft skills like speed under pressure and teamwork in your bullets.

How do I show speed on a cook resume?

Use the numbers your kitchen tracks: covers per night, tickets per hour, ticket times, or banquet plates in a set time. Name the station with each number.

Should a cook resume be one page?

Yes. One page with your most recent kitchens is right for nearly every cook. Older jobs outside food service can be cut or kept to one line each.

Should I list fast food experience on a cook resume?

Yes. Fast food teaches speed, food safety and following specs. Name the station (grill, fryer, prep), the volume and anything you were trusted with, such as opening or training new crew.

Does culinary school matter for a cook job?

It helps but is rarely required. Most kitchens hire cooks on experience and a working interview, often called a stage. If you went to culinary school or a career-tech program, list it with the year.

How do I move from cook to sous chef on my resume?

Show the leadership parts of your work: training cooks, opening and closing, writing prep lists, placing orders and covering for the sous chef. Put those first, then aim your headline and summary at the sous chef role.
