Dental Assistant Resume: Examples (2026)

Dental assistant resume example with chairside bullets, summaries, skills, and how to list DANB certification and state credentials. Free template.

Template:

A certified dental assistant with four years in a general dental practice applying for a lead dental assistant position at a larger multi-dentist office.

Why this resume works

  • The CDA from DANB is the first credential on the page, and the summary says she is certified, so an office manager knows her x-ray and infection control training is documented.
  • Each bullet is something a dentist feels at the chair: 12 to 16 patients a day, retakes under 3 percent, and impression remakes down from 12 to 3 a quarter.
  • Sterilization for 6 operatories and Spanish with 20+ patients a week show lead-level ownership, which is the job she is applying for.

Dentists hiring an assistant are picturing the chair: someone who has the next instrument ready before they ask, takes a clean x-ray on the first try, keeps a nervous patient calm and turns the room over on time. Your resume should show exactly that, in numbers, plus the credentials your state requires for the duties you will do. Dental assisting rules differ more from state to state than most healthcare jobs, so being clear about what you are certified to do matters.

How to write a dental assistant resume

1

Put your credential and practice type under your name

Write the title you hold in your state (for example Certified Dental Assistant, Registered Dental Assistant or Expanded Function Dental Assistant) and the kind of practice: general, pediatric, orthodontic, oral surgery or periodontics. Offices hire for their specialty, and the headline tells them you fit.

2

List certifications and state credentials together

Give each credential its full name, the body that issued it and the year: DANB certifications or exams, any state registration, license or permit, and CPR or BLS. If your state requires a credential to take x-rays or do expanded functions, this is where the office will check.

3

Write a short summary about your chairside work

Years in dentistry and the practice type, how many patients you assist on a day, three or four skills (x-rays, scanning, sterilization, patient comfort), your credentials, and the job you want. Mention a second language if you use it with patients.

4

Use bullets that a dentist would recognize

Name procedures you assist on, patients per day, x-rays and scans per day, operatories you manage and anything you improved: fewer retakes, faster room turnover, fewer remakes, better recall bookings. Start each one with an action like assist, take, set up or schedule.

5

Name the software and equipment

Practice management software (Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental), imaging systems, intraoral scanners and CAD/CAM units are all things an office would otherwise have to train you on. List the ones you have used.

6

Add your training and keep it to one page

List your dental assisting program with the school and year, or say you trained on the job if that is how you learned. Leave off unrelated older jobs unless they show customer service, and keep the whole resume on one page.

  • Fabricate 15+ temporary crowns a week to the dentist's approval on the first fit.
  • Raised hygiene recall bookings from 61 to 78 percent by scheduling the next visit before patients left the chair.

Certifications and state credentials for dental assistants

Dental assistant rules are set by each state, usually through its dental board, and they cover which duties an assistant may do and what training or exam each duty needs. Titles differ too: the Dental Assisting National Board points out licensed dental assistants in Minnesota, expanded function dental auxiliaries in New Mexico, registered dental assistants in Tennessee and Michigan, and orthodontic assistant permits in California. Look up your state on DANB's state requirements page, then list the credentials you hold:

  • Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) from DANB: earned by passing three component exams, Radiation Health and Safety (RHS), Infection Control (ICE) and General Chairside Assisting (GC), within five years.
  • Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam: DANB says its RHS exam is recognized or required in many states for taking dental x-rays. If you passed it on its own, list it.
  • Other DANB certifications, listed on DANB's certification page: National Entry Level Dental Assistant (NELDA), Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA), Certified Preventive Functions Dental Assistant (CPFDA) and Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA).
  • State registration, license or permit, such as RDA, LDA, EFDA or a radiography permit: name the state and the issuing board.
  • CPR or BLS from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, with the year.

The example, line by line

This is Sofia's resume. She has four years in a general practice and is applying to lead the assistants in a larger office. Here is what each part does.

Headline: Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), General Dentistry. Credential and practice type in six words.

Summary: 4 years, a 3-dentist practice and 12 to 16 patients a day come first. Then the skills a lead needs (x-rays, scanning, sterilization, patient comfort), her CDA and BLS, Spanish, and the lead role she wants.

Certifications: the CDA from DANB, earned in 2022, and BLS. Because the CDA includes the RHS and ICE exams, it documents her x-ray and infection control training in one line.

Experience: the first bullet sets the scope. The next two are quality results a dentist values: 25 to 30 x-ray images a day with retakes under 3 percent, and 8 to 10 scans a week with remakes down from 12 to 3 a quarter. Sterilization for 6 operatories and Spanish with 20+ patients a week are the lead responsibilities she already has. Her dental aide job keeps one line: 5 operatories and up to 40 child visits a day.

Education, skills and languages: her certificate program, eight skills including Dentrix by name, and Spanish in its own section.

Dental assistant resume mistakes to avoid

  • Listing duties your state does not allow. Coronal polishing, sealants or x-rays may need a specific credential where you apply. Only list expanded duties you are qualified to do in that state.
  • Writing certified without saying by whom. Say DANB CDA, or the state board that issued your registration. Offices verify both.
  • No patient or x-ray numbers. A dentist reads 12 patients a day and 25 x-ray images a day as a pace they can plan around. Give yours.
  • Forgetting the software. If you know Dentrix, Eaglesoft or Open Dental, say which. It saves the office training time.
  • Hiding the specialty. Orthodontic, pediatric and surgical assisting are different jobs. Name the practice type for every position.

Frequently asked questions

What should a dental assistant put on a resume?

A headline with your title and practice type, a short summary, your DANB certifications and state credentials, each job with patients per day and chairside duties, your training program, and skills including your practice software.

Do dental assistants need to be certified?

It depends on the state and on the duties. Each state sets its own rules, and some require a specific exam or registration for tasks like x-rays or expanded functions. DANB certification is a national credential that some states recognize or require for these steps.

What is a CDA?

Certified Dental Assistant, a certification from the Dental Assisting National Board. You earn it by passing the RHS, ICE and GC exams within five years.

How do I write a dental assistant resume with no experience?

Lead with your training program and any DANB exams you have passed, then describe your externship like a job: the practice type, patients per day and procedures you assisted on. Add customer service or childcare work that shows you are good with people.

What skills should I put on a dental assistant resume?

Four-handed assisting, x-rays, impressions or intraoral scans, sterilization, temporary crowns, patient education, and the practice software you use. Add soft skills like calming nervous patients through your bullets.

Where do I list my x-ray certification?

In your certifications section with the issuer and year, for example <em>Radiation Health and Safety (RHS), DANB, 2026</em>, or the state radiography credential by its state name.

Should I list expanded functions on my resume?

Yes, if you hold the credential for them in the state where you apply. Name the credential and list the functions you perform, such as coronal polishing or sealants.

How long should a dental assistant resume be?

One page. Lead assistants with many years can still fit their credentials, two or three recent jobs and skills on one page.

What is the difference between a dental assistant and a dental hygienist resume?

A dental assistant resume focuses on chairside support, x-rays, sterilization and patient comfort. A hygienist resume centers on the hygiene license, cleanings, periodontal care and the hygiene patients seen each day.

Should I include my bilingual skills?

Yes. Put the language in your summary and in a languages section, and say how you use it, such as explaining treatment plans to Spanish-speaking patients.
